England and South Wales 2024: A Journey to Remember
3. 10. 2024
Passport? Check. Blanket for the bus? Check. Just a quick stretch before the journey, a heartfelt goodbye to my parents, and we’re ready to go!
Similar thoughts must have crossed the minds of our second graders this June as they boarded a fully loaded bus, eager for a week in a country where kindness flows as freely as tea, where drizzle is a companion rather than a complaint, and where history, culture, and charm greet you at every turn.
This was no ordinary trip—it was a journey to the land of Shakespeare, Churchill, and the Beatles. A place where brick houses stand proudly amidst endless green landscapes and the tranquillity is almost deafening. We were headed to the United Kingdom.
Our first morning found us not in England but in Belgium, where the iconic metal spheres of the Atomium greeted us. While the Atomium doesn’t serve tea and scones, Belgium had its own treats in store. We wandered the enchanting streets of Bruges, discovering hidden corners, gliding along its canals by boat, and savouring authentic Belgian waffles.
After a night in France, we boarded a ferry at dawn, crossing the Channel to British shores. The chalk cliffs of Dover welcomed us with their dazzling white smile, signalling the start of our true British adventure.
Our first stop was Windsor, the seat of the British royal family, where history seemed to whisper through every hall. Touring the castle, we marvelled at Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House—a miniature masterpiece that left us in awe.
Next came Avebury, where sheep grazed serenely among ancient stone circles, and Glastonbury, steeped in legend and mysticism as the rumoured resting place of the Holy Grail. The small town of Wells amazed us with its striking cathedral and bishop’s palace, while Bath offered a glimpse into Roman grandeur with its famous baths and distinctive Georgian architecture.
But our journey wasn’t confined to England. Crossing into Wales, the land of the red dragon, we explored Chepstow Castle, wandered the ruins of Tintern Abbey, and experienced the vibrant energy of Cardiff, the Welsh capital. Some of us even picked up a few Welsh words—no small feat!
Our adventure culminated in the heart of England, the bustling capital of London. From iconic landmarks to charming souvenirs, we soaked in everything the city had to offer. The hunt for "I Love London" T-shirts was successful, and we managed to catch a glimpse of King Charles—a moment none of us will forget.
After bidding a bittersweet farewell to our gracious host families, we headed home, hearts full of memories. This trip was more than sightseeing; it was an experience of culture, history, and warm hospitality.
The UK has a way of capturing hearts, and it’s safe to say we’re already dreaming of our next visit. If you haven’t been, take it from us: it’s a place you’ll want to come back to.
