Mathematics

Who are we?

Although maths is not our school focus, you'll get to know the basics and we'll show you how to use it in places you wouldn't normally expect. We will, of course, teach you primarily applied mathematics, that is, mathematics that allows you to calculate things in everyday life, think analytically and argue factually. It will probably come as no surprise that this also includes teaching selected topics in computer science. But we will also enable you to explore mathematics as a tool for thinking, communication and philosophical reflection. You will find that it is closely related not only to the natural sciences, but also to the study of languages, logical thinking and the quest to understand the world and the universe. We're not about regurgitating lectures and formulas, but about teaching you to think mathematically and use knowledge to solve problems and challenges. You will come across mathematics almost everywhere these days (probably most in economics, technology, computer science) and being friends withit is an advantage that will put you ahead of the rest.

If you enjoy maths, you can choose a two-year maths seminar in year 3 or then a one-year maths seminar in year 4. It will prepare you well for graduation and university entrance exams.

What do we do?

If maths and computer science is close to your heart, you'll find plenty of opportunities to further your career with us. You can enter competitions (see here for a list of current competitions) to see how you compare to other students at other schools, or join courses or clubs that have been running at our school for a long time. You will find that many of them are run by students themselves. For example, try a course on learning C++ programming language or go to the CoderDojo young programmers club. There's a good group there that will help you get up to speed and get involved quickly.
